Per the Federal Highway Administration, motor vehicle crashes kill more than 1 million people and result in 20-50 million serious injuries annually. While roadway safety is a concern for all citizens, government agencies must prioritize roadway safety over other initiatives and readily recognize its status as a major public health concern.
Partnerships That Support Mutual Objectives
The Lutzie 43 Foundation partners with federal, state and local transportation agencies to help them achieve their goals of reducing roadway crashes attributed to distracted, impaired and unsafe driving through delivery of their Safe Driving Summits and distribution of their co-branded 43 Key Seconds “keys.”

The Lutzie 43 Foundation’s partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation is particularly noteworthy and a hallmark of our successful approach.
Georgia DOT launched its Drive Alert Arrive Alive safety campaign in 2015 to encourage drivers to buckle up, stay off the phone and drive without distractions. In November 2021, the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Lutzie 43 Foundation entered into a multi-year partnership to promote safe driving and reduce the number crashes and fatalities caused by distracted, impaired and unsafe driving. The partnership focuses on three main areas: awareness, education and key distribution.
Safe Driving Summits
The Safe Driving Summits, presented at high schools and colleges, educate students about the dangers of distracted, impaired and unsafe driving. Students listen to a keynote presentation to begin the day and then break into smaller groups to attend four breakout sessions facilitated by leaders across the safe driving community.
Georgia DOT’s HERO and CHAMP teams and Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) programs distribute 43 Key Seconds keys to drivers during their stops and calls.
