Meet Ivie Kocher, a 2025 PFL Scholarship Winner

When I first began the process of applying for the Lutzie 43 Foundation Prepared for Life (PFL) Scholarship, I thought it was simply another chance to support my academic future or a financial opportunity, like so many other students pursue. But what I found along the way was something deeper. I am beyond honored to be a recipient of the PFL Scholarship. Being a part of the Lutzie 43 Foundation, I feel a want and need to uphold Philip Lutzenkirchen’s legacy to be a strong leader and inspiring person. Apart from the financial aid, it is much more of an honor being chosen to exemplify the ideals and legacy of Philip. I am very excited going forward to honor this foundation in all the ways I can. Receiving this scholarship has not only lightened the load on my college journey at Auburn University, but it has also inspired me to live with greater intentionality, accountability, and purpose.

The Lutzie 43 Foundation was created in memory of Philip Lutzenkirchen, a standout Auburn football player known not only for his athletic abilities but for the way he lived his life: with character, humility, and a heart for others. While his life was tragically cut short in a preventable car crash involving impaired and distracted driving, his legacy continues through this foundation, and now, I’m humbled to carry that legacy forward in my own. One of the most meaningful aspects of the PFL Scholarship is that it’s not just about academics or extracurriculars, it’s about character. The scholarship application asked me to reflect on who I am, how I make decisions, and what kind of impact I want to leave on the world. This wasn’t a resume; it was a mirror.

The application process made me stop and think: Am I the kind of person who acts with integrity, even when no one is watching? Do I lead by example, and if not, how can I begin to? Applying for this scholarship pushed me to reflect on my personal choices, particularly around distracted driving, and leadership. It challenged me to be better, not just for myself, but for those around me. Since learning about Philip’s story and the 43 Key Seconds safe driving initiative, I’ve made a conscious effort to slow down before I drive. I put my phone away, check my mirrors, and remind myself: I’m not just responsible for my life, I’m responsible for the lives of others on the road too. And that mindset of intentionality has extended beyond the driver’s seat. I’ve started approaching other areas of life with the same awareness, whether it’s making decisions about friendships, schoolwork, or how I spend my time.

I grew up an Auburn fan but was never informed of Philip’s story and how strongly it affected the Auburn community. Even though I never met Philip Lutzenkirchen, I feel a strong connection to his story. He was someone who stood out not just for what he did, but for how he did it, with humility, joy, and a commitment to others. In reading about his life, I was struck by how he made people feel seen and valued, whether they were teammates, classmates, or complete strangers. That’s the kind of impact I hope to have in my own life. Whether I’m volunteering in my community or working with peers at school, I want to be someone who lifts others, just like Philip did. Being selected for this scholarship reminds me that the way we live matters, and that even in our absence, our actions can ripple out and shape the lives of others.

As I prepare to take the next step in my education and life journey, I’m carrying the lessons of this scholarship with me. I’m committed to being a 43 Key Seconds ambassador in my community, to speaking up about the dangers of distracted driving, and more importantly, modeling safe behaviors myself. I want to encourage others to take those extra seconds to think, to breathe, and to make choices they can be proud of.

Most of all, I’m thankful. Thankful to the Lutzie 43 Foundation for believing in me. Thankful to Philip’s family and friends for turning tragedy into a mission of hope. And thankful to be one small part of a growing community dedicated to making our roads, and our lives, safer and more meaningful.

This scholarship is more than a financial award. It’s a call to live with purpose, a reminder of the legacy we each have the power to leave behind, and a challenge to be a better version of ourselves every single day.

And it all starts with just 43 seconds.
