Meet Ryan Shields, 2018 PFL Scholarship Recipient

Thanks to one of 2018 PFL Scholarship recipients, Ryan Shields, for providing this blog post!

I’m still so humbled to be one of ten recipients across the country of the 2018 PFL Character Scholarship. I first heard about the 43 Lessons to Legacy when Mike attended Manhattan College last year.

Mike gave a great speech. The pride Mike spoke with reminded me of my own relationship with my father. It reiterated to me the reasons why I got involved in sports at a young age, and why I opted to come to the United States to better my opportunities and prospects in the first instance.

There have been numerous occasions throughout my three years at college when I have faced adversity with injuries, financial issues, homesickness or doubts about my soccer career. I’m so glad that I persevered, which was one of my three lessons that appealed to me the most. It’s important to water the grass that you have, which was something I took away from Mike’s speech.

Honor and Genuineness were my other two legacies. I’ve always tried to stay true to myself and virtues, and have been motivated by my family, both of which I felt were also important to Philip, and so I could relate to him and Mike’s vision in that sense.

These lessons will stay with me as something that I can consistently refer back to throughout my life, and hopefully pass on to others through my actions. Again, I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to be a recipient of such a great award, and would like to thank the Lutzenkirchen family for allowing me to complete my degree!
