Meet Xzavier Jackson, a 2026 PFL Scholarship Winner

When I began the application for the Prepared for Life (PFL) Scholarship I looked at it as just applying to another scholarship, I’m competing with hundreds of others. I told myself not to get my hopes up. But during this time I didn’t know I was becoming a part of a story driven in leadership and Legacy. Each step of this scholarship was about learning whether it was learning about Philip Lutzenkirchen and how his legacy continues to impact the youth today all across the country changed my perspective of the Prepared For Life scholarship I understood that this scholarship was about spreading awareness as much as it was about helping the youth it was almost a “help me help you” tone.

It is an honor to be considered as a PFL Scholarship winner for 2026. It means being trusted to be a human representative of the values that Philip stood for, being a good example for those who come after you by showing great character, making decisions, and protecting myself and others from any dangers, including those that may occur on the road. The scholarship shows that a leader is not someone with a fancy title; it is anyone who has the courage and the patience to make the right decisions when nobody sees him/her. There are many things I have realized while applying for this scholarship. One of them was the importance of slowing down. Schoolwork, studying, working, and social life all move very fast, and sometimes, it is hard to find time for oneself, not even thinking about other things. But when reading about doing research about the PFL scholarship I understood how important it is to stop and realize what kind of responsibility comes with driving a car because in a second, you may jeopardize your own safety, as well as the safety of your loved ones.

The 43 Key Seconds checklist turned out to be a highly effective tool that everyone should use in their journey into self-awareness. In the beginning, it seemed like any other checklist, yet the more time passed, the more I realized how crucial these 43 seconds are. The couple of minutes that I spend waiting before putting the key into ignition provide me with an opportunity to stop, think, and take responsibility for myself and my surroundings. These moments make me realize once again that operating a vehicle should be treated as a privilege, not a right. Now, whenever you discuss the topic of safe driving, you should try to share your checklist with friends and relatives.

During this reflective process, I had a chance to analyze the PFL legacy and determine the type of leadership influence that it has been to everyone who has applied or even did research on this topic. Although I have always known that good leadership implies willingness to help people, this experience provided me with a deeper understanding that leadership also presupposes personal responsibility. In addition to that, it means being accountable and willing to put myself into an awkward situation, which can protect another person from any potential threats. I believe that Philip Lutzenkirchen was a leader of such kind.

Moreover, this scholarship has a special meaning and significance to me, personally. Through all the years of my life, I have witnessed numerous events that proved how fast everything could change. I was amazed to see how one simple decision might influence a whole village of people  dramatically and swiftly. That is mainly why safe driving became such an important value for me, not only as an essential thing to do but also as something that would pay respect to all those people who believed in me and supported me throughout my life, giving me an opportunity to be able to make such decisions.

By winning the PFL Scholarship, I have got a step closer to following my dreams and goals without any worries. I will be able to devote myself to education and pursue my aims and purposes. The most important thing for me now is not only to achieve success by myself but also to help other people become successful. I am eager to share my knowledge and experience in order to help others make the right decisions that will contribute to their development and future. Thus, by winning this award, I will be able to continue advocating for safe driving among my peers.

Leadership may be made up of many small choices. Leadership is about choosing responsibility over convenience in those decisions. Leadership is about standing up and speaking up when the courage is required. Leadership is about learning, having humility, and protecting others at all costs, despite how difficult it is.

To become a PFL scholar was a blessing and honor all at once and it is much more. Being a PFL scholar means keeping the legacy of Philip alive respectfully. It is a commitment to lead with character, humility, courage, and making responsible decisions. Being a PFL scholar means leading by example and using my voice to inspire others to live their life the way they are intended to be lived.

To be chosen as one of the few Lutzie 43 PFL scholars is an honor because the foundation believes in me, my potential and gives me a gift of opportunities to serve and be intentional. I am proud to be a member of the 2026 class of PFL Scholars and look forward to honoring the scholarship every time I get behind the wheel, whenever I have a conversation with my classmates, and every time I make a decision.

This scholarship isn’t the end, it’s the start of something bigger. And I’m ready to carry it forward.
