Nucor Steel Case Study

Nucor Corporation is the largest steel producer in the United States, the largest “mini-mill” steelmaker, and North America’s largest scrap recycler. The company has more than 300 locations and more than 27,000 employees, including 720 teammates in its Decatur, Alabama division.

Challenge: As a family-oriented company, Nucor defines its culture by the core values of teamwork, integrity, and treating people the right way. Since most of Nucor’s employees commute to offices and job sites, the company was challenged with protecting their safety to and from work as well as when they’re off the clock.

Solution: Because Nucor cares about safe driving among its teammates and their families, the company sought programs that involved everyone. Nucor enlisted Lutzie 43 Foundation’s Mike Lutzenkirchen to speak at a team dinner to raise awareness around distracted driving and employee driving safety. Nucor also purchased 43 Key Seconds keys for their employees and family members. To promote safe driving among teens, Nucor sponsored co-branded keys for students at local schools.

Results: The Lutzie 43 Foundation’s 43 Key Seconds keys have amplified the safe driving message among both adults and teens. Awareness has spread throughout the community as drivers come into contact with key holders.

Quote: “Safety is a focus in everything we do at Nucor. We’re thrilled with the response we’ve gotten to our partnership with The Lutzie 43 Foundation. The Lutzie keys have become true symbols within the community to practice safe driving.”
