43 Keys Seconds

Thompson High School Case Study

Located in Alabaster, Alabama, Thompson High School is one of the largest schools in the state with an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students in grades 9 through 12.

Challenge: In 2018, a Thompson High School senior was killed in a vehicle accident caused by texting while driving on the interstate. The school was challenged with developing ways to prevent distracted, impaired and unsafe driving among its students, staff and young people in the community.

Solution: Thompson sponsors several programs on distracted, impaired and unsafe driving both at school and in the community, including student organizations that promote safe driving. Lutzie 43 Foundation’s mission and message lined up perfectly with the school’s goals, so Mike Lutzenkirchen was invited to speak to the students on several occasions, and the high school purchased co-branded 43 Key Seconds keys and lanyards with 43 Key Seconds cards for students.

Results: Lutzie 43 Foundation’s mission and Mike’s story of his son Philip touched the students in a meaningful way. Mike’s presentations and the 43 Key Seconds keys have given students a sense of empowerment.  Students have a better understanding of the dangers of teen distracted driving and, as a result, they have become more active in promoting student driving safety.

Quote: Can’t put a value on this because it was such a strong impact. This is what drove everyone to get involved in student driving safety causes; and, we will continue to partner with Lutzie 43 for years to come. –Dr. Wesley Hester, Principal of Thompson High School
