I am extremely blessed to be a recipient of the 2025 Prepared for Life (PFL) Scholarship given by the Lutzie 43 Foundation. I am honored to carry on Philip’s legacy by promoting safe driving habits to those around me. After going through the 43 Lessons to Legacy curriculum, I feel better equipped to speak out about the dangers of distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving, and to encourage those around me to make intentional choices behind the wheel.

It was June 2014, when I met Philip Lutzenkirchen. To me, he was the cool football player working at my dad’s office that everyone was talking about. Growing up in a family that loved all things Auburn, I remember watching Philip play in Jordan-Hare Stadium. I begged my dad to meet him, and I am so glad I did. As a nine-year-old, I was playing softball at a local league. Philip asked me about my softball games and showed genuine interest in what I had to say. He told me how proud he was and encouraged me to work hard to achieve my goals. I was amazed that someone I looked up to as a football star would take the time to meet me and encourage me in my own pursuits.
Philip passed away just a few weeks after I met him, and ever since, I have followed his family’s foundation. Philip inspired me not only to continue playing softball but also to work hard in all that I do. One of Philip’s well-known sayings was, “I know God’s working, so I smile.” This quote has stuck with me through every aspect of my life and was even one of my senior quotes. While working hard for worldly things is good, the true goal is to glorify God in all that we do. After graduating high school and playing my last season of softball, I look back to the time I really began to give it my all. I always remembered to keep Philip’s words close to my heart and continue to work hard in all that I do. It is amazing how someone’s words of encouragement and positivity can have such a lasting impact on our lives. The lessons I have learned from Philip will undoubtedly serve me in my future endeavors.
The 43 Key Seconds Safe Driving Checklist emphasizes taking a moment to ensure we are fully prepared to drive safely. One element of this checklist that stands out to me is “Clear Hands.” This principle emphasizes keeping both hands on the wheel and avoiding distractions. This includes technology, eating, adjusting the radio, and more. This is crucial as even a few seconds of distraction can result in an accident. As a driver, I make it a priority to put my phone away before I start my car, as well as set up my map and music beforehand so I’m not tempted to use my hands for anything other than steering. As a passenger, I encourage my friends daily to do the same, reminding them of the importance of focusing on the road and offering to handle any adjustments they might need. Leading by example, I hope to create a culture of responsible driving where safety is prioritized above all else.
From the 43 Lessons to Legacy curriculum, the lesson that resonates with me the most is humility. Philip embodied humility in the way he treated others, no matter their background or status. His willingness to engage with a young softball player like me and encourage my dreams demonstrated his true character. As a leader, I strive to carry that same humility into my interactions. Whether it’s mentoring younger students, serving as a role model in my community, or simply taking the time to listen to others, I aim to lead with compassion.
Through Philip’s life and the lessons he left behind, I have learned that leadership is not about recognition but about making a difference in the lives of others. As I continue my journey through college and beyond, I will carry the lessons learned. I will advocate for safe driving, ensuring that my actions reflect my commitment to protecting others on the road. I will strive to be a source of encouragement and positivity, just as Philip was for me. His legacy is a reminder that small actions and simple words of kindness can have profound impact, and I am honored to play a part in continuing that legacy. I cannot thank the Lutzie 43 Foundation enough for allowing me to be a representative for Philip.
