Safe Driving Summits

What is a Safe Driving Summit?
The purpose of the Safe Driving Summits are to educate high school students about the dangers of distracted, impaired and unsafe driving, and provide them with tools to make better decisions behind the wheel.
Students from local high schools will listen to a keynote presentation to begin the day and then break into several smaller groups where they will attend four breakout sessions led by leaders across the safe driving community. Attending students will leave with real life examples and stories that they can share with their friends, family and community. By sharing these stories and experiences, students will become positive ambassadors for safe driving, reducing the number of crashes and fatalities caused by distracted, impaired or unsafe driving.

About the breakout sessions

Share the Road: Get to know Big Trucks
Presented by J & M Tank Lines, Inc. and Lanier Technical College
In this breakout session, professional truck drivers will lead small groups of students through how to safely share the road with tractor-trailers. Students will learn about stopping distances, blind spots, passing, general safety & distractions, when it comes to driving with these large vehicles. Students will have the opportunity to tour the J & M Tank Lines’ Tractor-Trailers, climb in the cab of the truck to see what professional truck drivers see, as well as what operations they go through. This session is designed to take the fear out of sharing the road with tractor-trailers and replace it with confidence.

Knowing Your Law Enforcement Agencies; State, County and City
Presented by Georgia State Patrol, Local County Sheriff’s Office and City Police Department
In this session, students will hear from law enforcement officers from the state, county and city agencies. The representative from each agency will describe the role, responsibilities and geographical coverage of their agency. Representatives include a state trooper, county sheriff and city officer. Additionally, students will hear first-hand how these agencies work together and what they have observed with teen drivers across the state. These law enforcement officials will provide teens with advice and tips they can use in the car to protect themselves and other drivers.

Choices Behind the Wheel: A Glimpse into the Trauma Bay
Presented by Wellstar Trauma Network, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Northeast Georgia Health System and a local EMS agency.
Students will get a chance to experience a live action look into the trauma bay of the ER when life saving measures are required for a teenager who drives distracted and unrestrained.

Road to Recovery
Presented by Wellstar Trauma Network and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
In this session students will learn about the consequences of trauma as a result of distracted, impaired or unsafe driving: traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. Students will actively participate in rehabilitation activities to gain an understanding of some of the challenges faced as they navigate the rehab process.
